Destination watch (2019)

Where to next? That is the question we are asking ourselves since our third day in Paris.

We’re still processing all the fun we had and further exploring things we learned in Paris but we do like the think ahead and daydream about our next adventures too.

In Paris we joked about perhaps some warmer climates next time but now we’re adding it to family dinner discussions and walks. Right now the kids are learning about space, so we’ve had some astronaut-based suggestions, but otherwise we’re still pretty wide open. The one “theme” we’re considering is to focus more on nature. “Nature” meaning everything from hiking and bike rides to visiting ruins and more outdoor sites.

Here is a very early working list of what we’ll be thinking about over the next few months.

Portugal

  1. beaches, food, trolley cars

  2. great way to extend Spain experience

  3. amazing history

  4. never been there before

Umbria

  1. Italian countryside is so romantic and alluring

  2. never been outside of Venice, Florence, Rome (2008 or 2016)

  3. cheaper than Tuscany

  4. gelato

Puglia

  1. Trulli (traditional dry-stone huts)

  2. beaches

  3. fewer crowds

  4. beautiful parks

Greece

  1. all-time favorite food ever

  2. haven’t been since 2010

  3. kids starting to understand history

  4. rugged terrain to explore on islands

Family discussion topic: Using the constraints of our consideration list above, which destination would be the best fit for your family?

(This is a helpful exercise for seeing where the family member’s priorities are. Prompt everyone to explain their answers. See what themes arise.)
